Child and Adolescent Services: Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for caregivers and their young children (2 to 6 years old) who are experiencing social, behavioral, or emotional challenges. PCIT is nationally recognized as one of the most effective treatments for children struggling with things like listening and minding, hyperactivity, frequent temper tantrums, aggression, whining, and other disruptive behavior. The PCIT therapist provides live “coaching” to help caregivers practice proven strategies to manage their child’s challenging behavior.

Here are some key points about PCIT:

Purpose and Goals:
The goal of PCIT is to promote a warm, supportive, and cooperative relationship between caregivers and their children; this serves as the basis for positive development of social skills and emotional regulation. The PCIT coach supports the caregiver as they learn to balance nurturing interaction skills with behavior management skills.

Methods and Formats:
PCIT is unique in that it involves live coaching using a “bug-in-the-ear” system for communicating with caregivers. The therapist coaches from an observation room while caregivers practice behavior management skills in real time during a “special play time.” Live coaching allows the caregiver to get immediate, positive feedback and support during challenging situations. PCIT involves weekly coaching sessions and a commitment by caregivers to practice regularly at home. Length of treatment is tailored to the needs of the family (12 to 20 sessions).

Who Can Benefit:

  • Caregivers: PCIT promotes positive parenting and communication skills and has been shown to reduce the stress associated with caregiving and increase caregiver confidence in managing their child’s behavior.
  • Children: PCIT promotes a decrease in the frequency and severity of disruptive and aggressive behavior, and an increase in cooperative, pro-social behavior.
  • Families: PCIT promotes safety and security in family attachments while having fun!
